Printable cake toppers

The cake topper app

Most advice for making a cake topper assumes you own a cutting machine. This is the version for people who own a phone and a printer.

Topper is a free Android app that makes a printable cake topper in two to three minutes from a template, or about five designing one from scratch. Pick one of over 130 templates, type any name, and export a print-ready A4 or US Letter sheet. No account, no cutting machine, no subscription. Printing it, cutting it out with scissors and taping it to a skewer takes roughly another fifteen minutes.

What it actually does

  1. Pick a design

Over 130 templates across 24 occasions - birthdays, weddings, christenings, baby showers, graduations, Christmas. Browse by occasion or search.

The template grid shows the finished topper, not a mockup, so what you see is what prints.

  2. Type the name

The name is a field, not baked-in pixels, so the layout re-flows around a long name instead of squeezing it. Change the font, the colour and the finish while you are there.

Names over eight letters usually read better on two lines than in a smaller font.

  3. Add numbers and elements

Ages 0 to 9 in eleven finishes, plus banners, balloons, hearts, crowns and flowers. Drag, resize, rotate.

  4. Export and print

One tap gives you a PNG or a print-ready PDF at true size on A4 or US Letter. Print at 100% scale on cardstock and the printed topper matches the size the app reported.

What is free and what is not

Being straight about this matters more than the word "free" in a headline. Most of the library costs nothing at all. A subset of premium designs unlocks by watching a short video, which is what pays for drawing new templates. There is no subscription and no paywall that traps a design you have already started.

How it compares to the alternatives

Anyone searching for a cake topper app is really choosing between four routes. Honestly stated:

Canva is the better tool if you already know it and want full design control. A Cricut wins on volume if you already own one. This app wins on speed, cost and not owning anything. Printing and cutting by hand adds roughly fifteen minutes to any of the first three columns.

Seven languages

The app is fully translated into English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian, German and Polish, including the template names and the occasion categories. It follows the language your phone is set to, and you can change it in settings.

Questions about the app

Is the cake topper app free?

Yes. Most of the 130+ templates are free outright, and a subset of premium designs unlocks by watching a short video. There is no subscription.

Is there an iPhone version?

Not at the moment. The app is Android only. On an iPhone you can still use the printable guides on this site and print from any design tool.

Do I need a Cricut or a cutting machine?

No. The whole app is built around printing on a home printer and cutting with scissors. A cutting machine speeds up large batches but changes nothing for one cake.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no email is required to export or print.

What paper should I print on?

Cardstock between 176 and 270 gsm, which is 65 to 100 lb cover. Ordinary 80 gsm copy paper buckles as soon as it meets buttercream.

Can I sell cakes decorated with these toppers?

Check the terms in the app before you commit to a paid order. The designs are original rather than licensed characters, which removes the most common legal risk in this category.
