Free printable cake toppers
Set out plainly: what costs nothing, what costs a short video, and where free templates elsewhere tend to have a catch.
Most of the 130-plus designs in the Topper app are free with no payment, no account and no subscription: choose a design, type a name, export it as PDF or PNG and print at home. Some of the more detailed premium designs unlock after a short video. There is no trial that quietly turns into a charge.

Why some designs ask for a video
Every design is drawn, checked and published in three resolutions. That costs working hours and server space. Rather than a subscription or a paywall, the more elaborate designs ask for a short video instead. It is a deliberate choice: somebody throwing one birthday party a year should not have to sign up to anything for it.
Free does not have to look cheap
The gap between a bought acrylic topper and a printed one is almost never the design. It comes down to three things that cost nothing but care:
- Cardstock instead of copy paper. 80 to 100 lb cover is the difference between a topper that stands and one that curls within ten minutes.
- Printing at 100% instead of "fit to page", so the proportions against the cake are right.
- Cutting cleanly just inside the outline. A white halo is the one thing that gives away a printed topper in a photograph.
What a home-printed topper actually costs
Free to download is not free on the kitchen table: there is still paper and ink. The arithmetic is short, and it explains why printing at home has no real competition.
| Item | Real cost | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Cardstock | £0.10–0.18 / $0.12–0.22 | One A4 or Letter sheet at 176–270 gsm, bought in a pack of 50. |
| Ink | £0.15–0.30 / $0.18–0.35 | One full-colour A4 page on a domestic inkjet. |
| Wooden skewer | £0.02–0.05 / $0.02–0.06 | Skewer or lollipop stick, sold by the hundred. |
| Total per topper | £0.30–0.50 / $0.35–0.60 | Including the test sheet, which you need once per project. |
| Bought printable file | £3–6 / $4–8 | One file, one name, and you still do the printing. |
| Ordered custom topper | £12–30 / $15–35 | Plus lead time and shipping. |
Prices vary by country, the ratio does not: roughly thirty times cheaper, and ready tonight rather than next week.
Vetting a free template from anywhere else
Not all free templates are equal, and the faults only show once you have committed the cardstock. Five checks, under a minute:
- Resolution at print size
- At least 300 dpi at the real finished size. A 1000-pixel-wide image stretched across 20 cm lands at 127 dpi, and the edges come out soft and stepped.
- File format
- PDF or PNG. A JPG arrives with a white background you then cut around by eye, and it shows on the finished piece.
- Stroke weight
- Nothing under about 2 mm at final size. The thin joins of a script face are the first thing to tear under scissors.
- Watermarks
- Some free previews are watermarked and the mark only appears on the print. Open the file full size before you commit a sheet.
- A stated finished size
- A template that does not say how wide it prints cannot be held against the cake before you cut.
Personal use and commercial use
This is the question nobody asks until they need it, and it starts to matter the moment a cake is sold rather than given.
- Decorating your own family cake is personal use. No serious free template forbids it.
- Selling the cake, even once, even to a neighbour, is commercial use. A great many free templates online explicitly exclude it.
- Reselling the file itself, or a topper cut from that file, is almost always prohibited, including where commercial use is otherwise allowed.
- Licensed characters from cartoons, films or sports teams stay protected even when the template is free. That is the most common legal exposure for anyone taking cake orders.
For the designs in this app, printing your own cake is exactly what they are for, and the artwork is original rather than drawn from existing licences. If you sell cakes, read the terms before committing to a paid order.
