Cake toppers with a name
The name is the only part of a topper that has to be readable from across a room. Everything else is decoration.
To put any name on a printable cake topper, pick a design, type the name, choose a font that suits its length, and print on cardstock at 100% scale. Cut it out with scissors and tape it to a skewer. Short names suit fine scripts; long names need a heavier sans-serif or two lines.
Choose the font by name length, not by taste
This is the mistake that makes most homemade toppers unreadable. A delicate script that looks beautiful on "Mia" becomes a grey smear on "Alexandria". The letters shrink because the name still has to fit the same width.
| Letters | Font that works | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 2 to 4 | Fine script | Room for the long tails and flourishes |
| 5 to 7 | Heavier script or a serif | The compromise that suits almost any name |
| 8 to 11 | Clean sans-serif, semibold | Each letter stays individually readable |
| 12 or more | Sans-serif on two lines | First name on top, age or surname beneath |
Practical test: if you cannot read the name on your phone screen at thumbnail size, nobody will read it on the cake.
How wide should the topper be
A topper wider than the cake tips forward and photographs like a sign. The rule that holds up is two thirds of the cake diameter.
| Cake diameter | Maximum topper width | Fits |
|---|---|---|
| 6 in (15 cm) | about 4 in (10 cm) | A short name, or a number on its own |
| 8 in (20 cm) | about 5 in (13 cm) | A name up to about seven letters |
| 10 in (25 cm) | about 6½ in (16 cm) | A name plus an age or a date |
| 12 in (30 cm) | about 7½ in (19 cm) | Two lines, e.g. a name and "Happy Birthday" |
Gold and glitter do not come out of a printer
A home printer cannot print metal. What looks like gold lettering on a printed topper is a gradient of ochre, yellow and brown standing in for reflected light. It works surprisingly well, on two conditions:
- Print on white, slightly glossy cardstock. On matte recycled paper, printed gold simply reads as mustard.
- Use a heavy enough font. A gradient needs area. In a hairline script there is nowhere for it to show.
- If you want real shine, lay thin gold washi tape or foil over the letters after cutting. It is handwork, but nobody mistakes it for print.
Designs that carry a name well
Every design has a free text field. Type the name in the app and the field adjusts to it.

Twin birthdays, joint parties and weddings all put two names on one topper. Do not set them on the same line. Put one above, the joining word small in the middle, and the second below. Both stay readable and the topper does not end up twice as wide.
Questions about names on cake toppers
Can I use accents and non-English characters?
Yes. Every bundled font covers accented Latin characters, so names like Zoë, José, Søren or Łukasz set correctly.
How large does the name print?
The sheet is laid out for A4 and US Letter. The name fills the width of the design, typically 4 to 6½ inches. Choose "Actual size" when printing, not "Fit to page", or everything shrinks by about four percent.
Can I use a number instead of a name?
Yes, and for birthdays a number is often the better choice because it reads from any distance.
Which cardstock holds a name best?
White 80 to 100 lb cover (216–270 gsm). Below 65 lb the topper bows forward once inserted; above 100 lb many home printers will only take it through the manual feed.
