Milestone birthday cake toppers
At 16 and 18 the number is the headline. At 40 and beyond, the wording is.
Pick a design, type the name and the age, and print at 100% on 80–100 lb cover cardstock. Cut it out and mount it on a skewer or lollipop stick. On an 8 inch (20 cm) cake, a two-digit number about 13–15 cm (5–6 in) wide reads from across the room without swamping the cake.
Sweet 16 and 18th
At these ages the number is the photograph. Keep the name smaller, above or below, and let the digits carry the colour.
- Black and gold: the most-requested combination for an 18th, for anyone.
- Blush and gold: soft, photographs well under warm party light.
- Holographic or neon: for a party with a theme rather than a dinner.
- Wording: “Sweet 16 · Maya”, “18 · Finally”, or just the name with the number.
21st and 30th
Two-digit numbers start to compete with the name. Either make the number the hero and add the name in a single word, or set the name large and put the age in a smaller badge underneath.
- 21st: “Cheers to 21”, “21 · Jake”, or a key motif (still traditional in the UK and Ireland).
- 30th: “Thirty, flirty & thriving”, “30 · Officially an adult”, or a plain “30” in gold.
40th, 50th and 60th: what to write
| Age | Style that suits it | Wording example |
|---|---|---|
| 40 | Black and gold, art deco | “40 & fabulous · Sarah” |
| 40 | Humour, bold type | “Vintage since 1987” |
| 50 | Gold on white, classic serif | “50 years of Mark” |
| 50 | Celebration, champagne | “Cheers to 50 years” |
| 60 | Elegant, understated | “60 · Happy birthday, Mum” |
| 60 | Family | “Grandpa · 60 years young” |

| 10 in / 25 cm | 16–18 cm (6–7 in) | 7–8 cm |
Wide numbers like 40 and 50 tip more easily: mount them on a flat lollipop stick, not a round skewer.

Gold or black for a milestone topper?
Gold on a light cake, black on a light cake with gold accents, white or gold on a dark one. Contrast with the frosting matters more than the colour itself.
Can the name and the number be on one topper?
Yes. Keep one of them clearly bigger. Two equal-sized elements fight each other and neither reads.
Can I add a photo?
Yes, with Topper Pro: adding your own photo is a Pro feature. A small round photo next to the number works best.
